JEAN-CHARLES GIRARD-MADOUX WINE GROWER IN CHIGNIN – SAVOIE

The Girard-Madoux family has long owned a wine estate in the commune of Chignin, the capital, south-east of Chambéry in Savoie. The estate was sold in 1976. The vines only left the family for a few decades, until Jean-Charles Girard-Madoux took training to learn the profession of winegrower. His studies in Beaune and his apprenticeship at Domaine Patrice Rion, in Burgundy, made him passionate about wine and working the vines. In 2006, a month after the end of his viticulture-oenology BTS, Jean-Charles Girard-Madoux bought the vines to recreate the estate. It then consists of 2.5 hectares of vines planted by his grandparents. Since then, the estate has spread over 6.5 hectares, where the Jacquère, Mondeuse, Roussanne and Gamay grape varieties rub shoulders.

The land

The vineyard is located on clay-limestone hillsides facing southwest, at the foot of the Savoyarde. The stony scree soil makes it a favourite terroir for our white and red wines.

Vine maintenance

To optimize the maturity of our grapes, the vines are stripped manually and a green harvest is carried out. All the maintenance operations of the vines (pruning, disbudding, training, etc.) are carried out by hand. Only the tillage is done mechanically by scratching, in particular to allow a better aeration of the soil.
